Steps

Course Navigation:

  • To make items available/unavailable in the menu, go to Settings > Navigation
  • Locate, then click and drag the item to the appropriate section.

Note that making standard Canvas course tools (e.g. Quizzes or Rubrics) unavailable in this way removes them from student view but they remain visible to instructors.  This is not the case for external tools which are completely hidden if marked unavailable.

Adding an Assignment:

These tools are available to be added as graded External Tool Assignments.  Many can also be added to a module as ungraded items (assignment links. should only be created for graded activities):

  • Go to assignments and click the +Assignment button
  • Specify assignment details (Name, points etc)
  • Select “External Tool” as the Submission type (or for Lucid, select Lucid as the type instead)
  • Click find
  • Select the appropriate tool
  • In some cases you will be prompted for details immediately after selecting a tool, in other cases you will need to save the assignment first and specify details afterwards.
  • Click Save to create an unpublished assignment or Save and Publish to make it immediately available.

Note: Some other tools are available in the assignment list which don’t have any built-in assessment functions – those are better added as module items not assignments as they can not be graded.

Adding a Module item:

  • Go to Modules and click the + button in the header of the module where you want to add the item.
  • Next to “Add”, select “External Tool”.
  • Select the appropriate tool from the list.
  • You may be prompted to specify options from the specific tool you selected.
  • Click Add Item to complete the process and save the new item in Canvas.

Linking/Embedding in the Rich Content Editor

These tools can be linked or embedded in any Canvas text box that uses the Rich Content Editor (e.g. Pages, Quiz questions, Assignment feedback, etc.)

  • Click the plug (“Apps”) button in the RCE toolbar
  • Recently used tools may be available in the menu directly
  • To access other tools, click View All
  • Click a tool from the list to select and link or embed it – specific options vary by tool.
